Download Youtube movies

Video Download Helper is one of the best youtube downloaders I have come across.

It is a free Firefox extension that sits on your Firefox toolbar. When you find a movie that you want to download just click on the Video Download button and choose from the Dropdown list the format you would like to save the movie in. Click on Download and it will download to your Download folder.
If you download as a .flv you will need an flv player.

If you download it as a mp4, you can play in Quicktime player or Media Player.

Be aware when you go to this site that you want to click on the 'Install the extension' this will add the Youtube downloader extension.

WARNING: You might not want to click on 'They are here' link, this leads to a place where you can search for movies but it brings up movie choices that are definitely not educational!

How to create Publishing Paper with lines

Open Word document
Insert a text box by clicking on the text box button
Click and drag a box on the page that is a suitable size for a picture
Click and drag another text box on the page that is a suitable size for publishing lines
Set the font size to 28
Hold down your shift key and the minus key, as you hold down both keys lines will appear on the page
Change the size of the lines by highlighting all the lines and changing the font size

How to save a Paint document as a jpeg

click and drag around the part of the screen you want

go to Image - Crop
select jpeg from Save as Type
click Save

(XP)

go to File-Save As
select jpeg from drop down Save as Type

Embedding Movies and removing related Movies

One of the biggest problems with embedding Youtube movies is that they have related movies showing on the end of clips and they are
most of the time not appropriate at all for students, or even have anything to do with the video you have uploaded.
There is an option on Youtube to embed movies without Related Movies.
Click on the More Options button (blue cog wheel) at the end of Embed.
Click in the box that has the tick next to 'Include related videos' so that the tick is not there anymore.

When you embed a movie in Wikispaces, click on the Embed Widget, do not select Video but click on Other HTML and paste code.
If you select Video it removes the 'w/o related videos, Other HTML will keep the w/o related videos code and the coloured border if you have ticked that option as well.
Many thanks @KiwiJoe90 for this hint.

But sometimes for some unknown reason, that does not work so there is one more step to take.
When you copy the Embed code from Youtube and place it your blog or wiki, go back to your Youtube site and look at the internet (URL) address at the top of the page, note what the last few letters/numbers are.

Go back to your blog or wiki to the embed code you wrote and insert at the end of the URL the following code

In this example the blue is the youtube url and the yellow is the code inserted

Another helpful hint came from @paulajamieson who suggested Vimeo and School Tube.
Vimeo looks like a great video embedding tool, no related videos but at the end of the movie there is an option to add comments. I will review School Tube later and add it to this post.

How to insert a division sign in Word

I often get asked how can you insert the division sign in Word. Here are the steps:
Word 2007

Click on the Insert tab on the Ribbon
Click on the Symbol button
Click on the Division symbol (or click on More Symbols if it is not there)
The Division symbol will now appear on the page

Word 2003

Go to Insert - Symbol
In the Font box scroll down until you see the font name Symbol
Look for the Division sign
Click on the Division symbol
The Division symbol will now appear on the page

Mac Users go to 'Schools and Macs' blog

If you want to use this symbol frequently then you can assign a shortcut key.

Assign a Shortcut Key
Word 2007 - Click on Insert tab, and then on Symbol button
Word 2003 - Go to Insert - Symbol

Click on More Symbols
Click on Division sign
Click on Shortcut Key button
Press a new shortcut key combination (I use Ctrl/)
Click Assign and Close

Tips with Delicious #1

More and more people are using Delicious with multiple accounts. Teachers are setting up Professional accounts, personal accounts and accounts for the classroom.

How do you switch from one account to the other?
First of all it is a good idea to Network to your accounts. Click on Network under your Name.
Click on Add a User to Network.
Type in the user name.
Click Add.

From now on, no matter what account you are logged into, you will see your other accounts.

How do I Switch accounts so that I can tag websites?
You need to sign out of the account you are in and then sign in under the new name.

How do I add websites from other Delicious Accounts?
Sign into the account you want to add to, go to Network and click on a User in the Network.
The long way of adding sites is to Control click (Apple Click) on each link that interests you (this will open the website in a new tab). If you like the look of the website then click on the Tag button on your toolbar.
The short way of adding sites is to read the description of the site as it appears, (check out the tags on the right hand side, they are a helpful indication to what the site is about) then click Save next to the title of the website. This will add this website to your Delicious Account.

Word 2007 (Windows) and blogging

What type of blogger are you? Can you type all your thoughts in one go into the blogging window and then publish, or are you the writer that needs time to think about what you say?

If you are the latter then Word 2007 offers a blogging option. Go to and select New and select New Blog Post.

First of all you will have to set up an account, and a dialogue box will appear where you will have to identify your Blog provider (in the case of this blog it is 'Blogger'). There is a pictures option but you need to be able to identify your own server to access the pictures, so it might be easier to leave the pictures alone and add them in the final stages. Once you have identified your provider, type in your User name and password that you usually use for editing your blog. Select your blog if you have more than one and then you can start typing in your new post. You can add more blogs by clicking on the Manage Accounts, going through the same procedure as before.

Now you can type your blog offline, save and return to it when you like.

When you are ready to publish, click on the Publish dropdown menu button. If
you choose Publish it will go straight to your blog site. If you choose Publish as Draft then you can add your photos.

Kids love jigsaws and when the jigsaw is a photo of themselves, then they love it even more. Some schools don't like to have children's faces on their wikis or blogs so how can you have a jigsaw of your children on a public website?

Cartoonise the photos using Befunky or any other Photo Editing programme (http://delicious.com/sharpjacqui/photoediting)
Then turn that photo into a jigsaw by creating an account at Jigzone

Word Annoyance 'Create your Drawing here'

One of the most annoying things in Word 2003 is when this ‘Create your drawing here’ box appears on your screen. You can remove it forever by going to Tools-Options, click on the General tab

There will be green tick in the Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting Autoshapes
Click in the box to remove the tick and then click OK.

When you go back to Word and insert an object there will be no ‘Create your Drawing here’ box!

Digital Camera Movies and Converting

All digital cameras have a movie recording facility. You can shoot small movies at least 30 secs at a time. Be aware that they can chew up your memory card. Some movie cameras save their movies in AVI format but some will save as Quicktime. Rad Video Tools will convert your Quicktime into AVI. Download the software. Open Rad Tools, find the file to convert, click on Convert a file. Choose AVI from Output type Click Convert. Click OK. Click Done! The movie will be converted into an AVI which can now be imported into a PowerPoint or MovieMaker.

How to copy photos from your camera without scanner and camera wizard

Some computers won't load up Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard which means you have to load your photos manually. If you have a memory card slot on your computer or laptop, take the memory card out of your camera and insert into your computer or attach the camera leads from the camera to your computer.

Go to My Computer

Double click on the Memory card

Double click on the DCIMfolder

Double click on any of the other folders you see

Press Ctrl A to select all photos and movies

Press Ctrl C to copy

Go to your My Pictures folder, make a new folder, open that folder

Go Ctrl V to paste. Your photos will now be in your My Pictures folder

Adding Delicious tag buttons to other computers

I would think that most of you would use multiple computers, one at home, your school laptop and maybe the classroom computers. If you want to just view your Delicious page then you would just type in the address delicious.com/yourusername

If you want to be able to tag websites when you find them, then you will need the Delicious buttons on the Browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari) you are using.

When you open your Delicious page, click on Sign In

Type your user name and password, press Enter on the Keyboard.

Click on Help

Click on Bookmarking buttons and add-ons for your browser or website under the Need tools?

Click on Firefox Bookmarks add-on if you are using Firefox

Click on Internet Explorer buttons if you are using Explorer

Click on Bookmarklet buttons for any browser if you are using Safari

Follow the instructions for installing buttons

Turn a screen capture or a graphic into a jpeg

Occasionally you might want a picture from somewhere on your computer or on the Internet and a right click to save as or copy does not work. Or in some cases as some people recently on one of my courses wanted to show a student's finished poster created in Publisher or Word on their blog or Wiki and they didn't want to show it as an attachment. You must save the image as a jpeg to insert into a blog or wiki, so you need a screen capture first.

Windows
To take a screen capture
- press PrtSc on your keyboard (some models like HP require you to hold down the Fn key at the same time)
- open Paint by going to Start - Accessories - Paint
- Press Ctrl V on your keyboard to paste the screen capture
- click on the Square Selector button

- click and drag around the part of the screen capture you want

- go to Image - Crop (Vista) or Edit - Copy to (XP)

To turn into a jpeg

- Go to Save. Save the picture in a folder that you have named to store pictures specifically for blogs and wikis

Mac Computers
For mac computers it is a lot easier, press Shift, Option 4, click and drag around what you want to save as an image, let go of mouse and it will be saved either to your desktop or to your documents.

Insert a photo into an Autoshape

Word 2003

Click on the Autoshape button on the Draw toolbar and select a shape. Click and drag the shape over your page.
Click on the arrow next to the Paint Can and select Fill Effects
Click on the Picture tab, click on Select a Picture
Navigate to your My Pictures folder and select a picture, click Insert and then OK
The picture will appear in your chosen Autoshape
If you want to change the shape because it is not suitable, click on the Draw button (on the Draw menu) and choose Change Autoshape, select another shape

Word 2007

Insert a photo by clicking on the Insert tab, click on Picture
Navigate to your My Pictures folder and select a picture, click Insert and then OK
Make sure the photo is selected, click on the Format tab, click on Picture Shape choose a shape by clicking on it from the dropdown menu and it will change the shape of the photo
You can keep changing the shape of the photo by choosing different shapes from the Picture Shape menu

Downloading youtube movies on Macs

I have just come across an easier way to download youtube movies on a Mac. This works only in Safari. As the movie is playing press Option - Command - A and an address window will open.
Click on the arrow next to the Movie File name to view all the files.
Double click on the biggest file and it will start downloading to your Download folder in your folder. The download file will be called get_video. Open your VLC player,
Go to File - Open and open your movie and it will play.

I have no Photo Editing Software on my computer

All windows computers in New Zealand schools come with Microsoft Office and part of that package (if it has been installed in its entirety) you will find Microsoft Picture Manager or on older versions Microsoft Photo Editor. This is perfect for most basic photo editing you need to do; such as cropping, brightening, rotating, remove red eye and most useful of all compressing photos
But sometimes for whatever reason there is no Picture Manager. But there are plenty of free programmes available. One particularly good downloadable one is Photofiltre which has loads of features that you can use, plus you can use it offline. There are also many free online programmes that have all the basic features plus some exciting extras. These are my recommendations.

Fotoflexer - comprehensive editing tools and great filters
Photoshop Express - cutdown version of Photoshop
Lunapic - filters, effects and animations
Phixer - photos can be saved to computer and Flickr
Picnik - comprehensive photo editing

Downloading Youtube movies and inserting into PowerPoint

Firstly you need to download 'youtube downloader'. This is the software that you will use to download youtube movies.
Second you will need to download a converting software called Pazera.
Next you find the youtube movie you want to download, download it in youtube downloader
Finally convert the movie from flv to avi
Now you can insert the movie into a PowerPoint

1. Download a youtube downloader
Go to youtube downloader . Click on Download Now
Click Download

Click Run , click Run on the next message

The 'youtube downloader wizard will start, click Next, click
I Agree, click Install, click Finish

The 'youtube downloader' will now be on your desktop.

2. Download Converting software Pazera

Go to Pazera and click Download nowClick Save. Choose where to save it.

You will need to extract the file so click on flvtoavi.exe, click Extract and choose where to extract it to. Double click on flvtoavi
The Pazera window will appear.

3. Open a youtube movie and download

Go to youtube, find a movie, click on the Internet address, press Ctrl C to copy the address. Doubleclick the youtube downloader on the desktop to open the downloader. Press Ctrl V in the 'Enter video URL' if it is not already there. Check that it in the Convert to box that it says MPEG4 Codec (AVI), if it doesn't say that then click on Convert video (previously downloaded)from file and select MPEG4 Codec from the dropdown menu. Click back on the Download video from YouTube, click OK. In the next dialogue box choose where you want to save this file, click Save. The movie will download. Click Close

4. Convert the FLV file to Avi

Click on . Find the movie you downloaded, and click Open. Click on the Convert button . The file will now be converted to an AVI

5. Insert into PowerPoint

In PowerPoint go to Insert - Movie and Sounds - Movie from file. Click on the movie file and click OK. Click Automatically or When clicked. To play the movie you will need to view it in slideshow view.
